Prehistoric Settlements

Within the Cavan Burren Park itself there are more than 50 hut sites and over 10km of prehistoric walls. Incorporated within these settlement features are over 150 boulder monuments.

Within a 500m square there is a virtual village. The hut sites are clearly visible –  each hut is within ‘talking distance’ of its neighbour – surely a compact village. There is also a clear hierarchy of huts with the most significant one being Hut 11 with its five rooms.

Six hut sites are outlined in this section. Hut 11, nicknamed Taj Mahal, is a five room hut within a complex of prehistoric walls and a dozen other hut sites all within a 500m squared area. Hut 2 is a three roomed hut incorporated into the walled circular enclosure nearby. Hut 12 is a very distinct sub-rectangular hut site. These three examples are easily illustrated by 3D or photographs, the other 30+ huts within the forest are not as easily illustrated, being grass covered remnant foundations within a green vegetation background, but all can be clearly identified. 10 km of prehistoric walls.
